White complained that her husband severely restricted her social activities, so that she had never learned to dance.
Due to changes in her attitude brought about psychiatric treatment, her husband became less sure of himself and more indulgent.
White was then free to enlarge the games people play berne of her activities. She signed up for dancing classes, and then discovered to her despair that she had a morbid fear of dance floors and had to abandon this project.
This unfortunate adventure, along with similar ones, laid out some important aspects of her marriage. For example, a boss who talks to his staff as a controlling 'parent' will often engender self-abased obediencetantrumsor other childlike responses from his employees.
The second half of the book catalogues a series of " mind games " in which people interact through a patterned and predictable series games people play berne "transactions" which are superficially plausible that is, they may appear normal to bystanders or even to the people involvedbut which actually conceal motivations, include private significance to the parties involved, and lead to a well-defined predictable outcome, usually counterproductive.

The three selves Transactional analysis evolved out of Freudian psychoanalysis, which Berne had studied and practiced. He had once had an adult male patient who admitted that he was really 'a little boy in an adult's clothing'.
In subsequent sessions, Berne would ask him whether it was now the little boy talking or the adult. From these and other experiences, Berne came to the view that within each person were three games people play berne or 'ego states' which often contradicted each other.
